Launched over two years, between 2012 and 2014, the topics in the Introduction to Early-Years Nutrition course are:

Introduction to Early-Years Nutrition

Module 1

  • Nutrition overview – Nutrition and its importance in the early-years.
  • Food groups – Achieving a healthy balanced diet, meeting nutrient needs.

 

Introduction to Early-Years Nutrition

Module 2

  • Nutrients for a healthy balanced diet – Macronutrients, micronutrients and fluids.
  • Problems associated with deficiency – Vitamin D deficiency, iron deficiency, at risk groups and achieving safe nutrient intakes.
  • Problems of excess – Obesity and dental decay.

 

Birth up to Weaning

Module 3

  • Feeding from Birth up to Weaning – Breastfeeding, formula feeding and combination feeding.
  • Growth measurements – Weight and growth assessment.
  • Supplementation – Vitamins requirements, supplementation and availability.
  • Common problems – Reflux and regurgitation, colic and constipation.
  • Teething – Important developmental roles and avoiding acid erosion and dental decay.

 

Weaning to 12 Months

Module 4

  • Feeding and nutritional needs.
  • Fluid intake.
  • Vitamin supplements.
  • Avoiding certain foods

 

Pregnancy

Module 5

  • Preconception.
  • Diet during pregnancy.
  • Limitation and avoidance.
  • General wellbeing

 

Toddler to Preschool

Module 6

  • A healthy diet for toddlers.
  • Convenience.
  • Avoidance and limitation.
  • Common nutritional problems.
  • Wellbeing
